One of my favorite ways to turn a simple wreath into a statement wall decor piece is to place it inside a tobacco basket. It adds warmth, texture and scale—and the best part is that the wreath can be changed with the seasons without replacing the basket itself. Now, these aren’t authentic, antique tobacco baskets used in 19th century tobacco farms in The Carolinas or Virginia. These are what I would refer to as “faux tobacco baskets”. You can find them almost anywhere these days with the popularity of farmhouse decor. So allow me to demonstrate this as a pictorial tour if you will, of the many ways I’ve used these versatile baskets as wreath enhancers— and even as wreaths themselves. This is how to decorate a tobacco basket.
I found these extra large tobacco baskets at a local discount store. What I like about them is that they remain in permanent spots in my home—all I do is switch out the wreaths in the center depending on the season. I usually use florist wire to attach them to the baskets. This one is in my dining area, currently decorated for fall. The wreath in the center was purchased at Walmart several years ago, and I just added some embellishments, like the houndstooth ribbon. And there’s that toile pumpkin I love so much. How to Decorate a Tobacco Basket with a Wreath
Here’s how it looks in the Spring and Summer. A simple lavender wreath I’ve had for many years:

And here it was a few years back when I was in my “buffalo check” phase for Christmas.
I liked the first large basket so much, I went back and bought a second. This one stays just as it looks here. It is in my gym/laundry room downstairs. I did not make the wreath. I bought it at a local boutique. It helps pretty up an otherwise utilitarian area.
I’ve also used smaller faux tobacco baskets as wreaths themselves.
This one I I bought premade at a local discount store, but greatly embellished it. In fact, I removed everything except the “welcome” and replaced it with what you see here. Just a girl, some florals, velvet pumpkins, ribbon and a hot glue gun.
Now this one may be my absolute favorite. I bought the black faux tobacco basket at Aldi in 2023, of all places. It was in the “Aisle of Shame” as Aldi fans sometimes call it—you know, that aisle filled with interesting doodads and geegaws we simply must have! I saw the basket and immediately knew it would become some sort of Christmas wreath. This was the result.
It’s certainly not your traditional Christmas wreath, but for the past few years I’ve decorated Christmas using metallics and neutrals. I bought the “Noel” on discount at a local boutique. It was dark red, so I painted it antique bronze. I cannot take credit for the gorgeous bow. I ordered it from a creator on Etsy. The bells came from Amazon—linked below— and the rest of the greenery and embelishments from Joanne Fabrics.
I’ve only scratched the surface here, but I hope these examples have inspired you to look at a faux tobacco basket differently. Whether you place a ready-made wreath inside one, embellish something you already own or create an entirely new design, it’s an easy and affordable way to make seasonal decor feel a little more special.
