We got a puppy earlier this year, which meant the rugs in our house had to go for a while. Between potty training and a sudden interest in scratching and chewing anything within reach, it just seemed easier to remove the temptation all together.
Now that she’s almost 10 months old, completely potty trained, and thankfully lost interest in chewing my rugs, I decided it was time to bring some softness back into the living room.
I started with selecting a runner for the entry area. I had recently swapped my black and white toile curtains for mushroom-colored velvet ones, so I wanted something that would work with the warmer colors in the room without feeling too perfectly matched.
This is the runner I chose. Unfortunately, this particular one is no longer available, but I loved the softness and pile so much that I decided to look at other rugs from the same brand for the living room.
I chose this 8′ x 10′ rug in a coordinating color and patter – and this one is still available on Amazon.

Here’s how the two rugs look together in the room. They aren’t an exact match – and that’s exactly what I wanted. The colors and patterns relate to one another just enough to make the spaces feel connected without looking overly coordinated.
For me, that’s the sweet spot: cohesive, relaxed, cozy.
